The aluminium rolled products Ecolite* and Superlite®* from ALVANCE Aluminium Duffel will go into the Mercedes-Benz EQS’ wings, doors, roof and side frame panels. Aluminium is ideally suited for this particular section because of its light weight. Aluminium is also an inherently sustainable material. It can be recycled infinitely, all while preserving its unique properties.
ALVANCE Aluminium Duffel is committed to supporting Mercedes-Benz AG in achieving their ambition to make their fleet of new cars CO2 neutral by 2039.
As a pioneer in the production of automotive body sheet, the ALVANCE Aluminium Duffel plant is continuously working to increase the amount of scrap that is used in its operations – which means an increase in recycled content of the final products. ALVANCE Aluminium Duffel is using 100% green electrical power for its operations and in addition the company performs annual environmental life cycle assessments (LCA) of its automotive products to quantify the environmental impact over the entire life cycle of these products. As  Dr. Ir. Dirk Inghels, Director Quality, Health, Safety and Environment of Duffel explains: “Life cycle assessments are a vital tool for mapping the upstream impacts and downstream benefits of our products, helping us to identify where environmental improvements can be made at various stages of the product-life cycle. At Duffel we’ve been undertaking LCA’s on our automotive products since 2012 and we will continue to use them as a technique to monitor both the CO2 footprint of what we manufacture and to identify key areas for improvement. As a result of this regular monitoring, our automotive products today have a cradle to gate CO2 footprint that makes them best in class – something which we know Mercedes-Benz AG and their customers appreciate”.
In addition, the operations at ALVANCE Aluminium Duffel are certified against the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) Chain of Custody standard. This ensures that not only the operations at the facility in Duffel meet the ASI standards, but also that the aluminium material can be sourced and produced in a responsible and sustainable way across the entire supply chain, from the extraction of bauxite down to the finished product.
