Bishop’s Pawns respond to the Global Health Challenge

Whyalla team taking big steps to climb the ladder

Whyalla’s Bishop’s Pawns team is back for the 2024 Global Health Challenge with an iron-clad determination to climb the Division 1 premiership table and even challenge those in the Premier League.

Finishing a creditable 35th last year, the SIMEC Mining Iron Ore crew knows a bit about health and wellbeing with all team members involved in the SIMEC Mining Iron Ore Emergency Response outfit.

Dale Young said that, as emergency response personnel, the team of himself, Alex Barns-Tripp, Dale Travers, Ella Blackwell and Adam Acton was always trying to find new ways to motivate themselves, stay fit and grow as a team. Rhiannon Davis is unable to be involved this year but will still be cheering the Bishop’s Pawns on with Adam stepping up in her place.

The banter and team environment will keep us motivated and we are striving to show some of these Premier League teams from last year there is competition for their spot”

“Our team was initially formed to motivate each other and get moving as we all know the struggles of maintaining regular exercise while being a shift worker,” Dale said.

“What started as a group of friendly banter and getting each other to get steps in has grown into a dedicated group.

“Not only did we push each other to win the title of most steps for the week last year, we also incorporated challenges to get our steps up including our emergency response training up and down staircases, wearing breathing apparatus etc.”

Dale was keen to encourage other LIBERTY Primary Metals Australia and Infrabuild teams to enter for another strong showing from Australian operations. Last year 59 of the 211 teams, entered worldwide from GFG Alliance operations, were from LPMA with another 88 coming from Infrabuild.

“During last year’s challenge, the team felt the benefits of regular exercises and have now carried those good habits into our personal lives full time,” Dale said. “We feel more motivated, focused and fresh during our time on-site.

“The banter and team environment will keep us motivated and we are striving to show some of these Premier League teams from last year there is competition for their spot.”
