Response to floods in Belgium and Luxembourg

This week Sanjeev wrote to our colleagues in Belgium and Luxembourg expressing his concern and support for those who had been affected by the appalling floods that had hit those countries. He was very glad to hear that none of our LIBERTY Liège-Dudelange colleagues has been physically harmed although he was very sad to hear that a few have had their homes lost or damaged.

At the same time, colleagues in LIBERTY Liège-Dudelange were themselves helping flood victims.

On Friday 16 July,  the cafeteria of the Centre Acier in Flémalle was made available to the municipal authorities so that they could organise the reception and sorting of clothing donations collected for the victims of the floods. The space has become the logistical hub under the authority of Liège Métropole a.s.b.l., a supra-communal organisation grouping together the 24 communes of the Liège district.

The clothes arrive by lorry in bags. About twenty volunteers, under the coaching of Jean Dardenne (Commune of Flémalle), sort the clothes and make packages labelled by type and size to facilitate distribution. This team works tirelessly every day from 9 am to 4 pm: even children participate with their parents to make their contribution to this humanitarian aid.

On Friday 23 July 2021, Olivier Lacroix welcomed Virginie Defrang-Firket, Mayor of Neupré and Vice-President of Liège Métropole, and Sophie Thémont, First Deputy Mayor of Flémalle and Federal Deputy, to show them around this important strategic centre. Like Sophie Thémont, Virginie Defrang-Firket expressed her heartfelt thanks: “Thank you for lending us this space. You have saved our lives”.
