Liberty Częstochowa donates building for Ukrainian refugee support

LIBERTY Częstochowa in Poland has donated a building, which will provide accommodation and shelter for around 250 Ukrainian refugees, to the city of Częstochowa. The four-story office building, which was formerly company offices, is now available for refugees following the officially inspection and hand over of the building to the Mayor of Częstochowa City, on Friday last week.

The opportunity to provide a major lift to Częstochowa’s humanitarian efforts came about when the steelwork’s team heard that Częstochowa City Hall was looking for a place suitable to accommodate a large number of refugees, who have arrived in the city in their thousands. The building had been unused since 2014 but all floors in the building have toilets, bathrooms with showers and rooms that can be used for kitchens and dining rooms. After being empty so long, the Czestochowa technical services team had to make a significant effort to make it habitable, including replacing radiators, making necessary repairs and tidying the rooms and the building’s immediate surroundings.

As part of its contribution to the running costs of the building, which is initially on loan until the end of June this year, LIBERTY Częstochowa will cover the costs of its heating, water, electricity, cleaning of common parts (corridors, staircases, bathrooms, toilets), sewage and municipal waste collection. The city of Częstochowa will organize refugees’ stays, provide them with beds and bedding, food, a laundry and clean social and technical rooms.

Krishnamoorthy Venkatasubramanian, the CEO of Liberty Czestochowa, said: “The management and the trade unions of LIBERTY Czestochowa, moved by the drama of Ukraine and the huge influx of refugees to Poland offered to lend our building free of charge to the City Hall, which is organizing support for them and was looking for accommodation. We are very pleased to agree that the building will be lent for free and I am grateful to our technical services team, who have carried out necessary repair and cleaning works in the building to make sure it is fit for its new residents. This is an expression of solidarity with the refugees by the whole community of LIBERTY Czestochowa.”

Krzysztof Matyjaszczyk, the Mayor of Czestochowa City, said: “The willingness of LIBERTY Czestochowa to help refugees and to support the city’s and its residents’ efforts in this area, proves that LIBERTY Czestochowa knows what true corporate social responsibility means.”
