Climate change: four key takeaways from the IPCC report

Behind GFG Alliance’s CN30 goal is the understanding that time for action is running out for the planet, so we need to change what we do and how we do it.

The IPCC, the body of the world’s leading climate experts, recently launched a report that focuses on the practical impacts of climate change on us and our planet. The report is 3600 pages long…but luckily GFG Alliance’s Global Head of Risk and Sustainability Marian Elliott breaks it down into four helpful takeaways:

1. Underlining the urgency

This is the critical decade. We have a small window to act and it’s closing fast. We might already be too late for some communities and eco-systems

2. The link between people and planet

40% of the population are ‘highly vulnerable’ to the effects of climate change. That has profound consequences for our societies. Loss and damage to these communities is coming and we need cross border collaboration to prepare for and mitigate these impacts

3. It’s not just about technology

Investment in education, health systems and social justice are key to developing resilience to the impacts of climate change

4. We need to do more to understand the broader impact of carbon reduction measures

Some technologies which reduce carbon might do more harm than good
