“We are witnessing history in the making” according to Mirela Stanciu, the coordinator of the LIBERTY Galati Volunteers who have leaped to help refugees crossing the border into Romania since the first days of invasion in Ukraine.

Supported by the company’s management team, the group of volunteers have rallied at the Ukrainian border to provide transportation for refugees and help buy blankets, food, clothing and other necessary items for the people staying in or transiting through Galati to other European destinations. Besides providing moral and financial support, LIBERTY Galati has also initiated a hiring program for refugees, in partnership with the local labour authority.

So far, more than 500,000 refugees – mainly women and children – have crossed Romanian borders out of which around 80,000 have chosen to stay in Romania. Galați town has become one of the main sanctuaries for migrants coming into the country.

The local authorities in Galati, along with the business and civic society, quickly mobilized to help manage the unparalleled situation. Student campuses, sports halls and stadiums in Galati have become shelters for thousands of refugees. Volunteers from LIBERTY Galati have been involved in supporting this tremendous effort from the very first days of the crisis. The team have helped drive people using their own and LIBERTY’s cars, bought supplies, played with children and given a helping hand in sorting the donations.

Mirela added: “LIBERTY Galati volunteers have joined forces with the refugees to peacefully fight for one goal: respect for human rights. Our own lives have completely changed since the outbreak of war at our borders – witnessing dramatic examples of strength and courage. We have been hugely impressed by the resilience of the Ukrainian people. Although language was a barrier to start with, we now have found that solidarity is a universal language.”
