LIBERTY Pipes Hartlepool Commences Production for Major UK Energy Infrastructure Project
LIBERTY Steel UK’s pipes division in Hartlepool has begun production on a significant contract to supply pipelines for a key UK energy infrastructure project led by the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) and Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power). This contract, secured last year, is a major milestone in the UK’s transition towards net zero emissions.
LIBERTY will manufacture 105km of offshore pipeline infrastructure to transport CO2 to the Endurance carbon capture storage facility in the North Sea, 1,000 meters below the seabed. The carbon steel linepipe production will continue until the third quarter of 2025.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen shared his thoughts on the project: “This contract exemplifies our strategy across Teesside, Darlington, and Hartlepool to use big international investments for the benefit of local communities. The NZT project will provide thousands of local jobs and sets a marker for how future industries can benefit real people.”
This contract is part of eight engineering, procurement, and construction packages awarded by NEP/NZT Power, valued at £4 billion in total. The project will use Greentec steel plate sourced from Voestalpine in Austria, reinforcing LIBERTY’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing. To support the project, LIBERTY Pipes Hartlepool has also recruited over 30 new employees.
Jeff Kabel, Chief Transformation Officer at LIBERTY Steel, commented on the preparations for the project: “After months of planning, mill preparation, recruitment, and training, LIBERTY Pipes Hartlepool is excited to start production. This project is a flagship for us and hopefully the first of many similar projects, both in the UK and internationally.”
LIBERTY Pipes Hartlepool has an extensive track record in the North Sea, and with this new contract, it extends its involvement in energy transition infrastructure. “We look forward to delivering the project safely and meeting our client’s expectations,” added Kabel.
