Lifesaving simulation at LIBERTY Speciality Steels

Imagine a crane driver becoming seriously ill and being unable to leave their high-up cabin. What should we do to help them?

In December, this hypothetical situation became a valuable training exercise for the LIBERTY Speciality Steels team, South and West Yorkshire Fire Brigades, and Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

The drill unfolded at the Billet Mill in Stocksbridge (UK), where the driver of a 20t crane was simulated to experience a life-threatening health issue. With limited information about the problem and no easy access to the crane, team members swiftly called for the fire brigade and emergency services. They arrived promptly and began their rescue operation on a dummy mannequin representing the distressed driver.

All services involved acted with professionalism and speed. A thorough risk assessment was conducted, various rescue scenarios were discussed, and the team ultimately chose the fastest and safest approach. Fire crews extended a ladder to reach the crane cabin and entered. Paramedics followed the same path, bringing a portable stretcher to transport the mannequin.

To safely lower the mannequin to the ground, paramedics used a rope as a makeshift cable. The exercise unfolded smoothly, offering valuable insights and lessons learned. Both South and West Yorkshire Fire Brigades expressed their gratitude to the LIBERTY team for the opportunity to perform this drill, effectively assessing potential risks and challenges that may arise in real-life situations.

Paramedics emphasised the importance of unified teamwork, coordinated action plans, and rapid response in emergency situations, as every second can be crucial.

“We’re pleased to have undertaken this exercise and tested the situation in real-life circumstances. A huge thank you to all our colleagues who participated in this learning exercise, especially Neil Padgett for his deep involvement in co-ordinating with the emergency services. This exercise has enriched us with valuable information, and we will develop further actions to provide enhanced safety for all our staff.”

Steven Harold, LIBERTY’s Health & Safety Lead for HVM and Narrowstrip
