The team at LIBERTY Magona were busy last weekend as they supported one of their long-standing local charities at its major annual event – “THALAS, Sea & Wind – the big hug”.
LIBERTY Magona has been supporting the Italian Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association (AISLA) for more than twenty years as the disease (ALS), which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, affects many people in the Piombino area.
For the last fifteen years the charity has given ALS patients the opportunity to experience sailing on specially adapted boats, and this year was no different. The AISLA Piombino volunteers organized, with the help of the Piombino city council, the Marina di Salivoli Tourist Port and Marina di Salivoli Yacht Club, a sail in the stretch from Piombino’s Salivoli port to the island of Elba. The crew of 18 sailboats and a catamaran (equipped to accommodate people in wheelchairs) welcomed 13 people with ALS and 75 of their relatives, friends and supporters on board to let them spend quality time on the water and enjoy the lovely conditions.
“We have been supporting this wonderful charity for many years and the THALAS event is one of the highlights of the year. It is great to see people who are often trapped at home by their condition experiencing the joy of sailing in the wind and the sea with the sun on their faces. I’d like to thank all of the team who took part and helped to deliver yet another fantastic and successful THALAS day.”
