European Works Council holds constructive meeting in Prague

LIBERTY believes in a positive, proactive approach  to partnering with unions and other employee  representative groups. We believe in creating an open and transparent platform for social dialogue and encourage opportunities for unions to interact and connect with our CEOs.

Therefore in 2021 we established a European Works Council which is made up of 28 union and works council members from across our European, North Macedonia and the British sites. The EWC, which meets formally twice a year, doesn’t supersede local employee representation but is an additional transnational platform which helps to foster social dialog.

The most recent meeting was held in Prague on 15-16 March where the EWC was hosted by our Group Head of Industrial Relations, Oliver Brand. They were joined by Sandip Biswas, CEO of LIBERTY Primary Steel & Mining, Toker Ozcan, CEO LIBERTY GREENSTEEL EMEA, and Ajay Aggarwal, LIBERTY’s European President, who between them outlined the performance of our European businesses and our financial situation as well as updating the EWC on our major CN30 initiatives and projects.

The EWC also held sessions with senior members of the European HR team, who gave updates on human resources related developments such as Health & Safety, and our European Head of Communications, who outlined how we promote and protect our business by engaging with our internal and external stakeholders.

“The meeting was constructive and held in a generally positive tone throughout, with a range of valuable and insightful discussions which enabled all participants to openly share and discuss business imperatives, the challenges and opportunities ahead as well as areas of concern from our employees. I’m very much looking forward to making further progress at the next EWC meeting in September.”
