Preventing falls from height at LIBERTY Steel UK

Our people across LIBERTY Steel’s UK sites marked World Steel Safety Day 2022 with a series of local events on this year’s theme: preventing falls from height.

Here are just a few examples of the activities that took place.

Engineering Bar

In the lead up to World Steel Safety Day, Engineering Bar held auditing and safety conversations around the theme. On the day itself, the senior team accompanied the local safety leads and Trade Union safety representatives out on-site, auditing and engaging our people around preventing falls from height.

Rotherham Steel and Bar

The Engineering Services team in Rotherham Steel and Bar were out on site supporting World Steel Safety Day. The team leaders and supervisors undertook over 30 recorded audits as part of their activities for World Steel Safety Day.

Merchant Bar, Scunthorpe

On World Steel Safety Day itself, the Operations Manager led a team to proactively identify falls from height issues and make improvements. As part of these activities, the team focused on eliminating working at height during stacking and slinging of material in the finishing despatch area. They conducted a deep clean of the floor areas and re-marked out designated stacking areas.

High Value Manufacturing

The Stocksbridge team undertook focused audit across their plants on preventing falls from height. This focused on checking that the critical controls were in place and still being followed.

Newport

The team at Newport took the opportunity to remind all their teams of the rules around the safe use of steps and ladders by merging the new LSUK 365 learning system with the World Steel Safety Day topic. They rolled out the training for the ‘Safe Use of Ladders and Step Ladders’.

As a result of these efforts, the teams identified a number of hazards, contained them, and had many positive health and safety conversations.

Thanks to everyone involved for helping keep our people safe from falls from height. Keep up the good work!
