Shand Cycles partners with Gleneagles, to create new adventure gravel bikes

Visitors to Scotland’s Gleneagles will be able to ride a set of bespoke adventure gravel bikes on modified off-road trails after the iconic hotel partnered with Scottish bike company, Shand, to introduce new adventure cycling pursuits.

Gleneagles, which is widely known as one of Scotland’s most iconic hotels and sporting estates, is expanding its range of country pursuits and activities to now include guided and self-guided off-road cycling trails.

Shand, which designs, builds and assembles bespoke bikes in Livingston, has supplied four of its Stoater bikes to Gleneagles for guests to ride on trails modified by experienced adventure cyclist, Stuart Allan, who is part of the Shand team.

Stuart has worked with the Gleneagles Trail Yard team, who are responsible for curating the hotel’s outdoor pursuits, to create exciting off-road route alternatives offering challenges for amateur and experienced adventure cyclists alike. Guided bike tours will also be available to hotel guests.

While the Stoater is at home in the traditional rugged Scottish terrain that typifies Gleneagles, the Shand team has designed the bike for versatility across a range of landscapes.

Instead of derailleur cogs in the back wheel, the Gleneagles Stoaters have a Rohloff 14 speed internal gear hub which protects the gears from dirt and dust. The Rohloff hub is paired with an efficient carbon belt drive instead of a standard metal chain, to make the ride beautifully smooth and clean.

Gleneagles’ Director of Leisure Colin Farndon said: “We are excited to present a new adventure cycling experience to our guests, who will benefit from four hand built and painted bikes especially for us in our traditional olive-green colour with gold contour lines, emblematic of our Great Adventure Race.

“It is special to partner with Shand, which like Gleneagles is rooted in and inspired by Scotland and its unique landscape.”

Shand’s General Manager, Ann Ritchie-Cox, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be working with the team at Gleneagles to showcase the Stoater. Gleneagles is an iconic destination, which is steeped in Scottish tradition and history in a most beautiful part of Scotland.

“The trails will offer cyclists an adventurous means of enjoying the magnificent Scottish countryside while appreciating the versatility the bike has to offer. We are sure the guests at Gleneagles will love the new offering.”
