In his address, Sanjeev highlighted Australia’s unique opportunity to lead the global race in producing green iron and steel from hydrogen, and how that can support our plants across the world to decarbonise.
He highlighted the country’s potential to make a significant impact on the decarbonisation of the iron and steel industry, calling it a ‘generational opportunity’.
Australia’s future lies in green iron and electric arc furnaces to create green steel, offering a promising pathway to reduce global pollution, while also being a stimulus to global economy.
Sanjeev shared a simple model during his speech, outlining the steps to make hydrogen highly competitive:
– Utilise solar energy to generate electricity.
– Use the electricity to produce green hydrogen.
– Employ green hydrogen in the manufacturing of green iron.
– Transport the green iron to our facilities and partners worldwide to produce green steel
He also applauded the government’s action on climate change and advocated for the introduction of a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). A CBAM would level the playing field for Australian industries, ensuring fair competition and supporting our efforts towards decarbonisation.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of a higher carbon price and the implementation of stringent emissions standards to foster investment in clean technologies.
