If you enjoy social networks, or engage with your school alumni’s Facebook group, share progress updates with your running club, or participate in a lively discussion on LinkedIn, then Yammer in the workplace, will feel very familiar. Even if you are new to social media, it’s an intuitive platform that helps us stay connected to our colleagues and share learnings, stories, and engage over mutual interests.
Yammer is a closed network for staff, so your communication on the platform is secure and visible only to people within your organisation. Essentially, Yammer can be treated as your ‘Facebook for work’ with the look and feel of a familiar social media platform.
How do I access Yammer?
It comes pre-packaged as part of Microsoft 365, and it’s centred on ‘communities’ (think Facebook groups). Any user who has a company issued email has access to Yammer (it is part of all Microsoft 365 plans).
NB – a few groups are not part of the wide GFG Alliance Microsoft tenant, so while they do have their own Yammer, it is not linked interconnectable with other Yammers.

What can I share on Yammer?
Yammer has so much to offer! You can post, comment, join a range of communities based on your interest – it could be related to site or business specific updates, or interest areas such as DEI, community and HR updates, learning and development, health and safety or staff achievements.
Sounds simple right? Well, it is! Yammer provides a way to highlight important conversations, praise others, run quizzes and polls, and feel connected to the GFG Alliance family all around the world.
Anas Helali – Group IT Director – runs a regular feature on Yammer called ‘Tuesday Tech Tips‘ where he demystifies the role of technology in our work life, and shares simple IT solutions to make working more efficient.
As someone who enjoys creating content, Yammer provides me with an engaged community to spread knowledge, and exchange ideas.
At work, I usually interact with a limited audience, and it’s refreshing with Yammer, everyone everywhere can see my posts, and interact with me, ask questions to learn more.
Yammer is a great place for curious minds, where learning and sharing are ongoing.”
Anas Helali – Group IT Director
Yammer Communities
Communities in Yammer are developed under a theme, where you can share information with other colleagues interested in the topic, post images, articles, news related to the community, and run polls or quizzes. Here’s a quick look at some of GFG’s Yammer communities –
Our Family – a popular community for all GFG staff, to share local updates, staff events, insights, photos and staff stories.
Discover GREENSTEEL Academy – You might not know it, but you’re already a member of the GREENSTEEL Academy community, so why not join the new learning channel? The community has launched on Yammer and introduced us to their learning android Stela to engage, inspire and develop. The group has helpful, bite sized information on steel facts, carefully curated resources (new joiners – check out the rescue kit!), opportunities for events focused on green steelmaking, sustainability and more! Click here to join right now!
Diversity & Inclusion network – The DE&I Yammer community aims to support and connect people, to create diverse, equitable and inclusive employee environment, regardless of age, gender, and background.
The Women’s Network is a contributor to this community and provides a program of meetings every 6 to 8 weeks aimed at both men and women within the GFG family. The sessions are delivered by internal and external speakers and cover a wide range of topics, for example: practical ways to set and stick to goals, psychological safety, the importance of male allies, and more. These events are recorded and featured here and we hope they will constitute the basis for more discussions on this Yammer Group and also face-to-face discussions at the local level.
