Editorial: Marian’s Sustainability Update

In her new column, Marian D’Auria – GFG’s Head of Risk and Sustainability, shares her thoughts the most pressing matters to affect our planet, how it impacts our lives and how we can act more sustainably.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Sustainability wrap-up for April, which I am delighted to feature on SPOKE.

Nothing stands still in the world of sustainability and the last few months have been no exception! The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released their newest Synthesis report, setting out consolidated scientific data on the current state of climate and future scenarios that will inform policymakers in the run up to COP28 in Dubai. (More on that report below!).

Marian D’Auria talks about the lessons we can learn from the IPCC report 📃

More than 40 senior officials met in Copenhagen in March to set priorities for 2023 to stay on track for COP28. A consultation on the Taskforce for Nature Related Financial Disclosures opened, looking at how organisations should report on their wider impact on the natural world and biodiversity. And the EU unveiled a ‘Green Deal Industrial Plan’ whilst the UK announced initiatives under their ‘Energy Security Day’ banner – both to lukewarm responses from business and NGOs.

This past weekend, we celebrated Earth Day – head over to the official website (https://www.earthday.org/) to learn more, access toolkits, take a quiz to test your knowledge and find out how to get involved.

What we’re listening to…

The 6th IPCC report is a hugely important piece of work, setting out the global scientific community’s consensus view on the state of climate change and the likely scenarios we will face in the future. That said, the full report runs to 85 pages! If you want a ten-minute listen to what it says and why it matters, you could do worse than this Bloomberg Zero podcast with Akshat Rathi and Oscar Boyd setting it all out for us.
