The GFG Foundation Team has been visiting LIBERTY Primary Metals Australia (LPMA) and InfraBuild locations to kick off the launch of its 2024 Programmes, these include Whyalla, Georgetown, Newcastle, Tahmoor, and Brisbane, which are all set to host the GFG Foundation Student Programme this year.

Also dedicating time to present the programme to schools in these regions and introduce their new team member; Scarlett Burns, Australia’s GFG Foundation Coordinator.

The GFG Foundation Student Programme, began as a pilot project in 2019 in Whyalla, since then it has expanded significantly, extending its reach this year to include InfraBuild’s Brisbane business, supporting almost 700 students and now operating in five locations across Australia.

Almost 10,000 students worldwide have benefited from the GFG Foundation since its inception in the United Kingdom in 2017 by GFG Executive Chairman Sanjeev Gupta and his wife Nicola.

During presentations to business sites and schools, Georgina Crumpton, General Manager, for the GFG Foundation expressed her pride in the GFG Foundation’s achievements over a short period, highlighting the positive influence it has had on countless young people as well as our GFG mentors.

“The aim of the GFG Foundation is to inspire and empower young people in industrial communities to reach their life and employment potential,” Georgina said.

“We do this through running school programmes in areas that GFG Alliance has a significant presence.

“Our programmes help to give students some important skills to help them towards being job ready after school. These include STEM-based learning programmes designed to involve students in problem-solving real-world issues that are happening in their local communities.

“Throughout the whole programme there’s a strong focus on self-esteem building so that students develop confidence in using their own voice, expressing their points of view so they’re better able to navigate an adult world after school.”

As the GFG Foundation enters its sixth year in Australia, it remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing the talents and potential of young individuals, contributing to the growth and prosperity of industrial communities across the nation.

Georgina explained that “one of the things that’s of utmost importance to young people today is the environment and the impact that we have on the environment, not only as individuals, but as businesses and industries. We really want the next generation to be part of our transition to GREENSTEEL and it’s so important that they understand, and they realise, how important they are to this transition to change.”

A key factor of the Student Programme’s success is the involvement of GFG Alliance family members who volunteer as Programme Mentors. Over the past five years, nearly 200 GFG Mentors have dedicated their time, collectively investing more than 14,000 hours in the programme!

Georgina expressed gratitude to these mentors, emphasising their pivotal role in the Foundation’s success.

“Our Mentors are guiding lights and integral to the GFG Foundation. We cannot thank them enough for their kindness and generosity as they invest time in our next generation,” she said.

“The Mentorship programme provides an incredible opportunity to give back to our communities and work with young people to share knowledge and wisdom. Our Mentors derive as much personal and professional development from the programme as the students themselves.”
