LIBERTY Galati – new air heating technology reduces carbon emissions

A team of specialists from LIBERTY Galați has recently completed a modernisation project which will reduce the energy consumption at the plant’s blast furnace and reduce carbon emissions. The project is one of a number underway at Galati to strengthen the plant’s energy efficiency and further improve its environmental performance.

The project, carried out by blast furnace operators, project managers, and automation engineers from the plant, means the air injected into the furnace is no longer preheated using the classic mixture of blast-furnace gas and methane gas, but an optimised mix of oxygen-enriched air, blast-furnace gas, and methane gas – reducing the latter by 75% compared to the old solution, generating fewer carbon emissions and cutting production costs.

Under the new system, lines will inject oxygen, in a controlled and safe manner, into the combustion air used in the furnace’s four hot stoves. The equipment is fully automated and equipped with state-of-the-art safety, measurement, and control elements.
