LIBERTY Ostrava brings peace and calm to the town

Here’s a terrific story out of the Czech Republic that demonstrates how our people bring our shared values to life each and every day.

The LIBERTY Ostrava steelworks team have jumped on board with a council initiative designed to bring peace and calm to the town:

The town of Šenov, with its population of over 6,000 people, is located in the immediate vicinity of the LIBERTY Ostrava steelworks. The idea of a quiet zone was born in 2010 when the city council decided it needed to build a safe and peaceful place in the centre. The quiet zone would be a lovely place to visit for children from a nearby school, residents of old people’s home as well as visitors to the town hall, post office or local shops.

The managers of LIBERTY Ostrava learned about this decision at one of their regular meetings with the mayors of the surrounding municipalities and agreed to cooperate and support the Šenov project over the long term.

During the first stage, walkways were built and illuminated, benches were installed as well as a range of new attractions for children. Over the next few years, extensive landscaping was done and greenery planted while, in 2017, a workout playground with outdoor fitness elements was created. Since that addition the quiet zone has become more attractive to the ever-widening group of people who like to spend some of their free time there.

The Ostrava steelworks regularly contributes to the maintenance of the existing tress and plants as well as getting involved in new plantings. The once empty place today rings with the laughter of children waiting for the school bus, but also offers peace to the local community in the mornings and evenings.
