LIBERTY Steel at COP28, UAE

What is COP?

COP (Conference of the Parties) is a series of United Nations climate change conferences, which have been running since 1995. The goal of these conferences is to review progress made by members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to limit climate change. COP28 this year is being hosted in Dubai, UAE, from 30 November to 12 December.

Leading from the front

LIBERTY has a great deal to contribute to the COP28 debate and, more importantly, action on climate change, and are leading by example.

We have a very full programme planned for the Dubai summit, focused on engagement with governments, the financial sector and existing and potential commercial partners. And we have a simple message – join the GREENSTEEL revolution and work with us to accelerate action!

We will be participating in events hosted by the UAE COP28 team in the Bluezone, and leading our own reception at the Australian Pavilion to promote our Green Iron and Steel plans in Whyalla, South Australia.

Stefan Hakansson, our Chief Clean Energy Officer, will represent LIBERTY in the World Climate Summit (WCS) on 7th December, in Dubai.

On 8th December, our Executive Chairman, Sanjeev Gupta will present the keynote address at the same event, laying out our Green Iron and Steel vision to open the plenary session on ‘Turning Challenges Into Opportunities – Decarbonising Hard-To-Abate Sectors’. Stay tuned for how you can also participate.

This will be followed by a LIBERTY-hosted roundtable discussion, at WCS, on unlocking the investment necessary to decarbonise steel, hosted by our Head of Risk and Sustainability, Marian D’Auria and our Chief Capital Officer, Paul Altschwager.

On 8th evening, Dubai’s latest landmark Museum of the Future, will be the venue for our own reception, where an exclusive audience will be hosted for a showcase of our global operations, and attend invigorating debates on the most important topics to emerge from COP28.
