April’s Photo of the Month, by Petr Kupčík at LIBERTY Ostrava

Petr Kupčík, a foreman of Shift Management working at LIBERTY Ostrava for over 27 years, with a deep passion for photography, took this dramatic photo. When his grandfather first introduced him to the art of photography, shooting with a film camera, it set the stage for a lifelong joy of capturing images.

Our ‘Photo of the Month’ was a visual that Petr had in mind for a few years. The perfect shot needed patience, and he had to wait for the right weather conditions to combine the storm and the lightening against the backdrop of the plant. After several attempts the day had come, and he got the perfect shot at the first attempt, capturing the raw power of nature with the industrial landscape in the background.

How did he do it? Petr used his Nikon D500 with a focal length of 20mm, mounted on a tripod with a remote shutter to take the picture. Petr had taken several photos of storms before, and knew how to set up his camera to get the perfect shot.

The patience paid off, resulting in a breath-taking, dramatic photograph creating a striking contrast between nature and industry.

Petr’s advice for aspiring photographers is unsurprisingly patience, and finding the right light. For him, the light can make all the difference in a photograph. The right lighting can enhance the mood and feeling of a photograph. He also recommends investing in quality equipment and taking the time to learn the craft.

Those interested in shooting nature and outdoor structures, scout your locations in advance and be prepared to wait for the right weather conditions. Have a solid plan and visualise a few options but be ready for that spontaneous moment! Patience will help you capture the beauty of the natural world and the built environment.

Petr’s area of interest also includes wildlife photography – these pictures have been taken with a Nikon D500 camera using a macro 105 mm lens. It is a great advantage when the camera has a fast focus. It is almost a necessity, else you get a lot of blurred images. Just like landscapes, you have to be patient and can’t chase the insects! You need to be still and wait patiently for the right moment. He even bought a special camouflage outfit which helps him to capture such macro images.
