Sanjeev welcomes the Huta into LIBERTY

Sanjeev visited the newest addition to the LIBERTY Steel Group this week: the historic Huta Częstochowa, a GREENSTEEL plant a little over 200 km south of the Polish capital Warsaw. The Huta has been operational for around 120 years, over that time producing more than fifty million tons of steel.

Since LIBERTY took over the Huta’s lease at the end of December last year, we have been highly successful in restarting the plant and doing our best to protect the jobs of the plant’s 1,200 employees. We restarted the plant’s rolling mill within two weeks, using steel from LIBERTY Ostrava in the Czech Republic, and then a week later restarted the Huta’s electric arc furnace, saving it from being damaged from the Polish winter’s sub-zero temperatures. Two weeks after that we saw the first deliveries of GREEENSTEEL plate leaving the plant – a very positive step forward and one about which Sanjeev was keen to show his appreciation to the Polish team. We are now working towards completing the acquisition in line with the Częstochowa Court decision.

Sanjeev’s visit to the Huta followed a constructive meeting with Poland’s

Deputy Prime Minister Gowin, in which Sanjeev explained that our commitment to Poland stretches beyond Huta Częstochowa. He described how the Huta’s high quality plate products can contribute to the regrowth of Polish industry by becoming the main steel supplier for local infrastructure projects, the Polish defence sector and the country’s massive off-shore wind expansion project. Sanjeev was also able to remind the Deputy Prime Minister that we will continue to support the Polish shipping industry through LIBERTY Metal Recycling, which has been operating in the Port of Gdańsk for years and which intends to expand its business following the Huta Częstcohowa acquisition.
