A new partnership with Shangai Electric paves the way for the completion of SIMEC Energy Australia’s Cultana Solar Farm

Leading global electrical equipment manufacturer Shanghai Electric will provide engineering, procurement and construction services for SIMEC Energy Australia’s Cultana Solar Farm following the signing of a strategic partnership in June.

The agreement was signed by our Executive Chairman, Sanjeev Gupta, and SEC President Huang Ou in the presence of representatives from key supporting financial institutions at an official signing event.

The Cultana Solar Farm is the first project within SIMEC Energy Australia’s landmark US$1 billion, 1GW dispatchable renewable energy program in South Australia. With capacity of 280MW, Cultana is expected to produce around 600GWh of energy per year, powering the Alliance’s Whyalla Steelworks as well as a range of key government and commercial customers.

Set to be one of Australia’s largest solar farms, Cultana will deliver a range of benefits to the local community, increasing reliability and security of the state’s electricity supply and providing environmental benefits. The project is set to boost local employment, with about 350 positions created during construction.

“Cultana Solar Farm is an ambitious project that will deliver globally competitive renewable energy on a large scale to power heavy industry,” says Sanjeev. “It is a great step forward in our vision to revitalise industry and we look forward to working with our partners to bring our renewables projects to life.”

Sanjeev continues, “We are fortunate and grateful to have the global expertise of Shanghai Electric. We are confident of their performance to deliver this project on time and on budget, [and] to the highest standards, supporting our commitment [towards] the creation of hundreds of new local jobs in South Australia.”

Cultana will play a key role in the development of the GFG Alliance’s 10 Mtpa Whyalla Next-Gen steel plant project and industry revitalisation strategy.

“Our planned Next-Gen project will ignite a new industrial revolution in Australia,” says Sanjeev. “These projects are shining examples of GFG’s commitment to create a sustainable future for industry and build stronger local communities.”
