Welcoming new members to the GFG Alliance family

It has been an exciting year for GFG Alliance, not only have we seen development in our Australian and US businesses, our recent acquisitions in Europe have now made Liberty one of the largest steel producers in the world.

Over two weeks in September, Sanjeev and members of the GFG Alliance leadership team celebrated inaugurations of our new sites across Europe, travelling over 6,500 kilometres from London to Romania and back.

Earlier this year, Liberty completed the iconic acquisition of seven sites across Europe making it one of the top 10 steel producers in the world (excluding China), and the fourth largest in Europe with a rolling capacity of more than 18 million tonnes.

Hundreds of our new colleagues from the seven sites – Piombino (Italy), Ostrava (Czech Republic), Galati (Romania), Skopje (North Macedonia), Liege (Belgium) and Dudelange (Luxembourg) – and their customers joined in the celebrations.

Sanjeev said, “It has been a very special time for me and my family as we have finally had the chance to welcome our thousands new colleagues across Europe properly into the GFG family. I look forward to working with our new teams, as we work through our 100 Day programme, to define sound growth strategy so that our new sites can become beacons of strength and prosperity in their countries and across Europe.”

Liberty and GFG Alliance were also privileged to welcome local politicians and government representatives to the inauguration events, including officials from the Czech Republic, North Macedonia, Belgium’s Walloon Parliament and Romania.

We are always looking for ways to invest and improve our operations, and during the inaugurations we announced some exciting developments at several of our sites.

At Liberty Ostrava, Sanjeev signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Deputy Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, giving the Czech Government a seat on the plant’s Supervisory Board and launched a set of projects to reduce the site’s emissions.

Liberty Magona also launched a new working group to investigate the ways that the plant can better collaborate across the GFG supply chain – particularly with Liberty Galati – and announced the refurbishment of a previously closed pickling line.

Liberty Liège-Dudelange in Luxembourg will also be able to invest in a new, chrome-free surface treatment installation for their tinned products.

The inauguration events marked a special time for the GFG Alliance. We welcomed new colleagues into our family, built on our strengths and took a great step on our mission to create a sustainable future for industry and society.
