GFG Foundation – A year in review

As we look back at 2022 and reflect on what an exceptional year it has been for the GFG Foundation, we are reminded of the key role it plays in helping young people reach their potential and support local communities by boosting skills and employment prospects of future generations. The Foundation has successfully built a team of mentors who play a key role in transferring their skills, knowledge and experience to the youth.

This year saw the Foundation expand its global footprint and continue to nurture and develop the potential of hundreds of students. Here are some of the key milestones of 2022!

March 2022

The GFG Foundation also launched the student programme in Rotherham where students took part in a 12-week sustainability project supported by mentors from LIBERTY Steel UK. Read more here.

April 2022

The Foundation hosted an inauguration ceremony where Sanjeev announced the expansion in Bell Bay, Tasmania, and with this, GFG Foundation extended its Australian footprint and work with 30 high school children in the programme for 2022, which is delivered through a partnership with the Prince’s Trust and educational provider CSIRO.

Additionally in April, 30 students from Year 9 and Year 10 embarked on the 2022 Student Programme in Newcastle, NSW, Australia.

May 2022

The Foundation launched its programme in Romania, in partnership with LIBERTY Galati and Paul Dimo School in Galati in the presence of Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania, His Royal Highness Prince Radu of Romania and Her Royal Highness Princess Sophie of Romania.

20 students in Year 9 benefitted from a mix of vocational and technical training, with mentors from LIBERTY Galati helping with practical activities designed to develop not only their technical skills but also their life skills. Read more here.

July 2022

This was a milestone month for the Foundation where mentors from LIBERTY Steel Rotherham UK, proudly celebrated 20 bright young minds at their graduation ceremony. The students from two local schools worked on a project called ‘A Renewable Rotherham’, a task designed to engage the students in sustainability and environmental considerations of their local community. It was also a big month in Australia, with the roll out of the Foundation’s first Juniors Programme in Whyalla, South Australia, and expanded its Year 9 and Year 10 programme to George Town, Tasmania, which follows closely on the heels of the launch of LIBERTY Bell Bay earlier in 2022.

In Romania, the Foundation sponsored the Gala Excelentei in Educatie 2022 in Galati, which celebrated the achievements of young people.

The Foundation also set the stage to launch in the Czech Republic, with more plans to be revealed.

October 2002

In Galati, the Foundation in conjunction with Rewise Learning launched a STEM-based education programme for students in the dual learning class where 21 students on the programme were supported with monthly scholarships and bespoke education programmes. Dual education combines the teaching of theoretical knowledge by teachers with practical activities carried out with the help of LIBERTY Galati mentors. Read more here.

November 2002 –

The Foundation in Romania issued its first newsletter that highlighted its ongoing activities and milestones it had reached. These included:

Refurbishing the artwork at the Saint Apostles Andrew and Nicholas Church or ‘Steelworkers’ Cathedral’ as it is popularly called. Lying in the heart of the Galati community, the renovation will be completed imminently and unveiled to the community. The newsletter also covered the opening of the dual learning programme and the Foundation’s sponsorship of Otelul Galati, currently the region of Moldova’s most successful football club, as a way to build interest around sports in the community.
